1. Key Bible Passages on Anger
Below is a consolidated list of the principal verses that teach about anger (i.e., they direct, warn, or illustrate how God’s people should handle anger). Each is quoted in the ESV for consistency. (Occurrences where “anger” is merely mentioned in a narrative without moral instruction are not listed, or the study would run hundreds of verses long.)
Old Testament
1. Psalm 4 :4 “Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent.”
2. Psalm 37 :8 “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.”
3. Proverbs 14 :17 “A man of quick temper acts foolishly, and a man of evil devices is hated.”
4. Proverbs 14 :29 “Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.”
5. Proverbs 15 :1 “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
6. Proverbs 15 :18 “A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.”
7. Proverbs 16 :32 “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”
8. Proverbs 19 :11 “Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.”
9. Proverbs 22 :24–25 “Make no friendship with a man given to anger… lest you learn his ways…”
10. Proverbs 29 :11 “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.”
11. Proverbs 29 :22 “A man of wrath stirs up strife, and one given to anger causes much transgression.”
12. Ecclesiastes 7 :9 “Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.”
New Testament
1. Matthew 5 :22–24 Jesus equates unrighteous anger with murder of the heart and calls for immediate reconciliation.
2. Mark 3 :5 Jesus’ righteous anger: “He looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart.”
3. Ephesians 4 :26–27 “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.”
4. Ephesians 4 :31–32 “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger… be put away from you… Be kind to one another…”
5. Colossians 3 :8 “Now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice…”
6. Galatians 5 :19–21 Fits of anger are listed among “works of the flesh.”
7. James 1 :19–20 “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”
8. James 4 :1 Quarrels flow from “passions” at war within us.
9. 1 Timothy 2 :8 Men should pray “without anger or quarreling.”
